MIDWEEK BUZZzz: Mind-Body Exercise for Neuropathy

We talked about treating neuropathy with exercise this week and we will further this treatment with two mind-body exercises you may want to explore. Thinking about the condition of neuropathy, it is not a leap (pun intended) that if we achieve an exercise that not only supports our bodies, but also our minds, this would be beneficial.

Yoga

A 2012 review of the research of the effects of yoga on nervous system disorders published in Annals of Indian Academy of Neurology confirmed yoga as a valid integrative and complementary therapy for conditions such as neuropathy. While some yoga classes may be too advanced for sufferers with neuropathy, less-

advanced people may do well with a Hatha-style class that involves seated and standing postures, including Triangle pose, Camel and Bow pose, which can increase oxygenation of tissues, to improve blood circulation to nerves. Regular yoga practice also teaches one to handle the stress of neuropathy and shows how meditation and deep breathing can even distract from pain. While you would not want to replace entry level yoga for your cardio workouts, more advanced yoga classes can indeed have a cardio impact. Yoga classes can be located anywhere from community centers to local yoga studios.

Tai Chi

A 2018 article in Gerontology and Geriatric Medicine showed that Tai Chi practice actually increases the nerves’ ability and speed of sending signals back to the brain and spinal cord. It acknowledged that maintaining exercise program for neuropathy sufferers is challenging, and Tai Chi provided both physical and psychological well-being. After only a few weeks of Tai Chi practice, patients with neuropathy can improve physical function and it is a safe and effective intervention. Tai Chi teaches you to improve

balance and stability as well as to re-integrate the muscle control of legs, hips, and lower back. It focuses your bodies synergy to reawaken the connections between your muscles, body, and mind. Classes for Tai Chi for the most part will be less strenuous than most yoga and you can find classes just as easily.

Remember you have neuropathy, neuropathy does not have you! Have a great rest of your week...
